Legal gambling age UK (2026) – Legal Age to gamble in UK Casinos

In Great Britain you must be 18 to gamble — casinos, betting, bingo, and the National Lottery. Operators have to check. An under-18 account is void. Helpline: 0808 8020 133.

Britain does not split the casino age by county. If you are in Great Britain and the product is real-money gambling, the number is 18.

That covers remote and land-based casinos; betting on sports and racing, shop or app; bingo; and the National Lottery and other licensed lotteries. The lottery age completed its move to 18 in April 2021. It is not 16.

Northern Ireland uses its own statute. In practice the consumer number you will be asked for is still 18 for casino and betting products. Remote operators licensed for Great Britain who accept NI customers still have to keep children out.

This page is not a ranking of operators. It is the age rule, the check, and what happens when the check fails. 18+. You can lose.

Why the number is 18

The Gambling Act 2005 set 18 as the age for the products that can take a house edge in a hurry: casino, betting, bingo. Lottery used to sit lower. Parliament raised it. Instant-win and scratch products are not a training wheels version of gambling. They are gambling.

I am not going to argue for 16. The clinical picture on early start and later harm is not subtle. If you are 17, this site is not a “tips for when you turn 18” funnel. It is a closed door.

Victoria Coren Mitchell’s warning on casino odds and vulnerable players applies harder to a teenager than to a forty-year-old with a limit. The product is the same. The prefrontal brakes are not.

What operators must do

A licensed GB operator cannot take a child as a customer. Age verification is not a footer slogan. It is a licence condition.

In practice:

  1. You register with real details.
  2. Electronic checks run against official data.
  3. If the check is thin, they freeze play or freeze withdrawals until documents arrive — passport, driving licence, proof of address.
  4. Under 18, the account should never have been live. Stakes should be voided. That is the legal shape. It is not a “keep the winnings, lose the deposit” fiddle.

Land-based: expect to be asked at the door. Two forms of ID is ordinary in a casino. A shop will still challenge. “I left it in the car” is not a policy.

Remote: IP and device checks sit beside KYC. A VPN is not a way to be 18. It is a way to look like you are hiding. Operators already treat that as a risk flag.

Financial Risk Assessments, staged from July 2026, are about high spenders in difficulty. They are not an age-verification substitute. Age is binary. Affordability is not.

The British number

Activity Minimum age in Great Britain Notes
Online / land casino 18 Includes slots, live tables, game shows
Sports and racing betting 18 Shop, app, exchange
Bingo 18 Remote and premises
National Lottery / scratchcards / licensed lotteries 18 Age aligned from April 2021
Gaming machines in a licensed betting or casino setting 18 Category rules still sit under the Act
Social / demo play with no cash out Still not a reason to put a child on a real-money brand Demo on a licensed site is still next to a cashier

If a product asks for 16, it is not a GB real-money gambling product you should treat as licensed play. Stop.

How the check actually feels

Electronic match first. Documents if the match is thin. A live selfie against a passport is ordinary on a British remote cashier in 2026. So is a utility bill that is not three years old.

Until that is done, treat the account as not finished. Some operators let you browse. Some freeze deposits. Almost all freeze a first cashout. That freeze is the point. It is not a glitch you talk a chat agent into skipping.

If the name on the card, the name on the KYC, and the name on the Register’s customer file do not match, the withdrawal sits. Borrowing a partner’s debit card is how adults get accounts closed. It is also how a 17-year-old gets a parent’s file mixed with a child’s play. Do not.

Financial Risk Assessments, staged from July 2026, sit after age. They look at high spend. They do not make a 17-year-old 18. Do not confuse an affordability letter with an age pass.

Lottery, scratchcards, and the April 2021 line

People still search “lottery age 16” because that was the old National Lottery rule. It is not the rule. From April 2021 the National Lottery, scratchcards, and other licensed lottery products in Great Britain are 18. Instant-win on a phone is not a softer product. It is still gambling with a stake and a prize.

A shop assistant who does not challenge a young face is a staff failure, not a consumer permission. Remote lottery apps still run KYC. “I have bought tickets since I was 16” is a sentence about the past.

Society lotteries and raffle-shaped products still sit under licensing. If money is staked for a chance of a prize, assume 18 until a regulator page says otherwise. Do not assume a village raffle and a licensed remote scratch game are the same legal object.

Visitors, students, dual nationals

The test is not “I am 18 in my home country”. The test is: are you 18, and is this operator allowed to take you as a GB (or NI, if they accept you) customer?

A 17-year-old from a country where casino gambling starts earlier still cannot hold a GB remote account. A 19-year-old visitor can, if the operator accepts them and completes checks. Geolocation still has to match the licence.

University halls are not a loophole. A parent’s card is worse: it is usually a T&Cs breach and a KYC mess, and it can look like the adult’s account is being used by someone else.

Parents and under-18s

If a child has opened or used an account:

  • stop the payments you can stop
  • contact the operator in writing
  • call GamCare 0808 8020 133 — they talk to affected others
  • treat it as a safeguarding issue, not a telling-off that ends at confiscating a phone for an evening

Paying the child’s “debt” to an operator is a different question from paying an adult’s gambling debts. The account should not have existed. Get it in writing.

Device stores, app ratings and “simulated gambling” in games are a separate mess. They are not a UKGC casino licence. They can still normalise the loop. I am not reviewing them here. I am saying: 18 is the real-money line.

Advertising and “appeal to children”

Licensees cannot dress real-money gambling up as a kids’ product. The Commission has already acted where cartoon imagery sat too close to a cashier. That is their enforcement. Yours is simpler: if the creative looks like it was drawn for a twelve-year-old, you are looking at a compliance smell even if the age gate is 18.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the gambling age 18 everywhere in the UK?

Great Britain: yes for the products in the table. Northern Ireland: treat 18 as the working number for casino and betting; the statute is separate. Do not use a 16-year-old lottery memory. That memory is out of date.

Can I play if I turn 18 next month?

No.

How do they know I am 18?

Electronic checks, then documents if needed. A selfie-plus-passport flow is ordinary. Withdrawing without it is not.

What if I used a parent’s account at 17?

That account is in trouble as well as you. Tell the adult. Contact the operator. Helpline if the spend already hurts.

Is lottery still 16?

No. 18, from April 2021.

Can this site get me an account?

No. We do not onboard customers.

I am 18 and I already cannot stop.

Age legality and harm are different questions. You are old enough to be a customer. You are also old enough for GAMSTOP and GamCare. Use both if you need them.

Why do they want a selfie and a passport?

Because a typed date of birth is not evidence. The licence requires them to keep children out, not to take your word.

Can I use my older sibling’s account?

No. That account is then being used by someone it does not belong to. Under 18, it is also a child using licensed gambling. Both problems.

Does a demo or social mode make it legal under 18?

No. Demo on a real-money brand still sits next to a cashier. Under 18: do not be there.
